Title: Almost At Peace
Fandom: Naruto
Pairing: Tsunade/Shizune, past Dan/Tsunade
Notes: For June 2nd of fic-a-day
It had been the way Shizune looked at her when she thought she wasn't looking that made Tsunade kiss her for the first time. It had been a look she still recognized well, even after so many years had passed by, from seeing her own face in the mirror when she'd thought of Dan in the days when he'd still been hers. Though at that time she'd thought that she long since given up on her own happiness, had left it lying in blood and mud along with Dan's body, she was content to try providing her assistant with the same joy that she'd lost.
Tsunade had believed that she'd never be able to love anyone the way she'd loved Dan again, and that remained true. But as soft kisses turned into tentative caresses in the night, the human body which she knew down to its cells suddenly strange to her as she learned how to bring pleasure to another female body in more than just theory, she began to wonder if maybe she could love someone the way Dan had loved her. To delight in watching her learn and grow as a medic, and in the passion she showed for their work. To be the more mature lover, instead of the one half-overwhelmed by her first romance--although she did her best to push to the back of her mind just how much more 'mature' than Shizune she was under the henge she tried never to drop.
There were days when it felt like a betrayal to Dan, especially when out of every person in the world it was his last remaining family member that she'd taken as a lover. There were days when it felt like a betrayal to Shizune as well, that there were times when Tsunade looked at her and still thought 'Dan's niece' first and 'my lover' or 'my assistant' or even simply 'Shizune' second. But those days were few and far between. Most of the time she was simply slowly but surely growing used to her heart finally almost being at peace again.
And this time, she would at last be wise enough to be careful. With Shizune, Tsunade would make sure her grandfather's cursed necklace never even so much as brushed against her skin.
She was also wise enough to realize that that wouldn't be enough to guarantee them a long and happy life together, but she could accept that. Love was never a sure thing, after all, and she had always been a gambler.
