Title: Much Too Long
Fandom: Earthbound
Pairing: Tony/Jeff
Notes: Fourth fic for June Fic-A-Day
Tony didn't have psychic powers or a bubble-blowing monkey to help him. He didn't have incredible inventing skills that would let him make weapons out of anything in case he was attacked by an animal in the woods, although these days that wasn't really likely. He couldn't call up a lake monster to swim him over the water, and had to settle for a rowboat that he was only strong enough to paddle all the way across in due to sheer stubbornness keeping his arms moving.
He wasn't brave enough to take off in the middle of the night to help total strangers, but after way too many months with no contact but the rare letter he'd do just about anything to get to Jeff.
He didn't hesitate for a moment right up until he was on the doorstep of the Dr. Andronuts' lab, and then it suddenly became difficult just to push the door open and keep moving one foot in front of the other. Jeff's other friends had assured him that Jeff didn't think he was annoying when he'd asked them about it before, but what if they were wrong? What if the entire time they'd been roommates Jeff had just been waiting for an excuse like mysterious voices in his head calling him away from the school in order to get away from Tony? What if the whole reason he was living with his dad now was because he was too nice of a person to come out and say 'Hey, Tony, I'm the greatest guy you know, so what makes you think I'd want to keep wasting my time with a dweeby hat-wearer like you?' so he decided to just stay away instead?
All those doubts were soothed by the massive grin that spread over Jeff's face the moment he spotted Tony shuffling shyly in the entrance of the lab. "Tony!" he cried out, dropping the experiment he'd been working on carelessly onto a lab table and all-but sprinting across the room to pull him into a crushing hug. Becoming a world-traveling hero had made Jeff a lot stronger, Tony couldn't help noticing.
Even though that was nice, Tony was glad when Jeff decided that he'd been well-hugged and let go so he could turn and call up the stairs, "Dad! You need to come meet my best friend!"
It gave him a chance to scrub the mistiness away from his eyes before Jeff could notice and wonder why after so long just an embrace was enough to make Tony tear up a little.
