[FIC]Selfish, El-Hazard, Rune Venus, G
Jun. 28th, 2009 10:15 pmTitle: Selfish
Fandom: El-Hazard
Character: Rune Venus (past Galus/Rune)
Notes: For June fic-a-day. Takes place after episode five of The Magnificent World
Rune thought, afterwards, that perhaps he had been her punishment for being too selfish.
Galus had been too kind, too loving, too young and handsome. Too close to what she would have chosen for herself, had it been her choice to make. A marriage of love was one luxury the ruler of a nation could not afford, the political ties that would be best for the country coming first always, but she had been greedy enough to hope that perhaps it might be possible for them. Once the initial awkward strangeness that came from finding herself engaged to a stranger passed.
And even now her greedy heart hadn't learned its lesson and was filled with what-ifs and what-might-have-beens. If the girl hadn't seen through his illusion and they'd had a little more time together, might there have been even the slightest of his beginning to care for her truly and changing his plans? If, instead of seeking revenge for past wrongs, he had attempted to make things better for his people from within the system, and sought her hand under his own identity to that end, was there any chance that he could truly have been the gentle suitor he'd acted as? Would her advisors even have allowed her to consider his offer? If he had been able to convince them of his sincerity she thought that they would have; an alliance with the Phantom Tribe and an end to the ancient hostilities between their peoples could only have made Roshtaria stronger.
It was not the place of a ruler to hope for more out of their marriage than that their relationship might be politely congenial and good for that nation. If true affection was ever born from it that would be wonderful, but it was the height of selfishness to seek it.
Still, having come so close only to discover that it was nothing but lies, she couldn't forget those might-have-beens.
