person4: (Do the windy thing!)
[personal profile] person4
Today we've gotten our first real windstorm of the year. It started sometime in the early afternoon and is still going strong. They're really common in my area--now that they've started we'll keep getting them pretty often until spring really starts taking off, and then they'll start taking off again when it hits the point where autumn starts chilling into winter--so you'd think I'd be used to them, but I always spend the whole time one's raging feeling a little bit terrified. Which gets kind of emotionally exhausting, considering how long they always last!

The problem is that I live in the woods, and not only that but it's a pretty freaking marshy woods where most of the trees don't have especially strong roots. Especially just after all the winter snow has melted, like now, and all that water's soaked into the ground and the resulting muck holds the roots so loosely that you can literally knock trees over just by pushing them. So when the strong winds start blowing trees start toppling.

The end result is that I spend the whole time with a little voice in my head chanting "Please don't hit my house, please don't hit my house, please don't hit my house."

(Not to mention "Please don't hit me in the head, please don't hit me in the head," when I need to go outside for something.)
