Jun. 7th, 2005 11:45 pmOh my god, Project Gutenburg has Aunt Jane's Nieces! I know that probably doesn't mean anything to any of you, since it's not exactly a well known series (but it's written by L. Frank Baum pretending to be a woman!), but the first book in it was one of my absolute favorite books when I was young. When I was little my grandma gave me a first edition copy of it she'd found cheap at an estate sell, I read it a dozen times, then about five years ago I was with my mom at the car wash and had gotten out with it while she vacuumed out the inside. I left it sitting on the vacuum's base for a few minutes, and when it was time to leave it wasn't there so I figured I'd left it in the car and just thought I'd taken it out. But it wasn't in the car either.
Then I remembered that one of the workers there had emptied out the trash while we were there, and realised that he must have figured that the dirty old book was someones garbage or something and tossed it without even asking if it belonged to one of us. So the book that had been around for almost a century was sent off to the landfill. *sheds a tear for it*
So, yeah, this makes me very happy. Plus, it has other books from the series as well so I can see what happens after the first one, although it has a very satisfactory ending so it's not one of those cases where you need to read them all.
