Apparently the University of Michigan dental school totally sucked for me.
One of my molars has this cavity that looked like a tiny little thing, just about the size of a pin head, for a long time. "Okay," I thought, "it's so small that as long as I make sure to brush every time I have something sugary I should be able to wait until I have a good amount of extra money saved up to not make the cost of going to the dentist that big of a deal!" (Which is actually my way of saying that I'm terrified of getting my teeth drilled and welcome an excuse to put it off.)
Then all of a sudden the tooth just totally caved in into a giant, suddenly painful, cavity. I guess it was just rotting inward instead of eating up the outside the way I'm used to cavities growing, so I just never realized how big it was getting because on the surface it just looked like that itty bitty hole.
So a couple of years ago my mom had veneers done by the U of M school and had a great experience with them, and they're a lot cheaper than a normal dentist so I decided to go to the walk-in clinic. Where I waited for five hours to be seen because this unfortunately happened during exam time when the clinic was practically unstaffed. And when I finally got in I found out that their website was lying about their doing fillings in the walk-in clinic so it was a giant waste of time. More importantly, the dentist (and I got one of the full dentists, not one of the students) said that it wasn't infected and that they were pretty sure they could get it with a normal filling so since it wasn't an emergency I'd need to have one more visit where nothing happens except a consolatation then wait several more weeks to be assigned a student before I'd finally get my tooth fixed.
I decided to go to a normal dentist a few days back instead of waiting, because whenever I'm not careful chewing and something gets jammed down into the cavity it hurts like hell and I want to get it fixed faster than that.
Remember what they said about it not being a big problem yet? Well, apparently it actually was so infected that the normal dentist I went to expected that if I'd had to wait all that time my face would have ended up swelling up hugely before the week was out, and the cavity's so deep that if they tried just giving me a normal filling they'd need to leave decay down in the tooth because otherwise they'd tear into the nerve, and the filling would be sitting right on top of the nerve which'd make it so sensitive that it'd make drinking lukewarm water hurt like hell.
So I finally got antibiotics and painkillers and need to get a root canal tomorrow. And I definitely haven't been left with a good impression of the dental school, although I'll still be going back to them for the crown I'm going to need because it'll cost a lot less then the $700 it would otherwise be there. I'm just going to hope that my mom's experience is the norm and it was just the strain of exam time effecting people's brains that made mine so bad.
In happier news, within the next few days Yuletide's going to start up!
Definitely Requesting
Toki wo Kakeru Shoujo
Makoto, Chiaki, possibly Kousuke
Flash (comics)
Piper and Trickster
Possibly Requesting
Song of Ice and Fire
Arya and Jaqen, or maybe Tyrion and Varys using their brains at each other. Of course, if I got a request for that I'd go "Oh, crap, I'm not nearly smart enough for that" so maybe not.
Big O
Repeat last years request for Roger and Dastun this time without any other characters now that I know that I can only be matched with people who said they can write all characters requested (god I'm a dunce).
Shadow Hearts
Yuri and Joachim, or gen Joachim and Anastasia
Shin Megami Tensei: Digital Devil Saga
Argilla and Gale
And I'll just stop there since I'll already need to narrow it down.
