Title: Birthday Candles
Fandom: Silent Hill
Character: Harry
Requested by [livejournal.com profile] demoerin here (previously filled)
Notes: Written for June Fic-a-Day. Set at some point between Silent Hill 1 and 3.

Harry was never entirely sure how many candles he should put on her birthday cake.

Should he stop at the age she was now, or add an extra seven, in honor of his first poor, lost, Cheryl and to match the age they had to trick the world into believing she was? If he did that, should he then use another fourteen (or maybe just another seven; hard to tell how he should deal with the overlap between his Cheryl and that other girl) in remembrance of the girl who'd caused everything that had happened? He still hadn't entirely forgiven her, although he came closer to it with every year that went by, but if he added any extra candles at all it didn't seem entirely fair to leave her unacknowledged when she had given him his precious little girl. Both of them.

Maybe just one extra candle for each of them would be best. It would keep the entire cake from ending up flooded with candles, at least.

Every year he considered all this, and every year he ultimately decided not to use any candles at all and tossed the small box of them he'd originally bought for her first birthday back into the drawer they stayed in three-hundred-and-sixty-four days out of the year. Instead he quietly swore a vow to himself, one that he renewed every year, that he would make her happy. He would give her everything she could ever need, he would stay alert at every moment to make sure nothing would ever harm her, and he would make sure that she would be so perfectly happy that she wouldn't ever have anything that she needed to wish for and thus have no need for birthday candles.

She would probably be happier with it that way anyway. She never did like an open flame.
