Notes: For June Fic-a-Day

He had gotten better offers than Milton's when he'd gone around auditioning to join a show. A few had even said that they'd allow him on stage to do a trick or two of his own right from the start; only small ones, of course, and not many or often--they couldn't risk him overshadowing the main act after all--but enough to let him begin refining his skills on a real stage. When he'd set his mind on becoming a magician he'd resolved to make it to a show of his own as soon as possible, and a job as nothing but a ringer just couldn't compare.

He never would have doubted his choice, or likely even have thought twice about Milton the Magician again, if his father hadn't ground it into him from the time he was young that when cutting off business relations with someone, even if they had hardly begun, the gentlemanly thing to do was to do it face to face. He'd always been quite firm that doing so by a letter or telegram was a coward's way out, a way of distancing yourself from any upset you may have caused them. And Angier was many things, but none of them a coward.

If Milton had been out himself to meet him, it also would have been fine. He would have told him that he'd decided to take a job elsewhere (it would have been the third such notice he'd given that day), and if she had happened to come out a few minutes later, well, it would already have been too late.

But, no. It was Julia out on the stage when he'd entered the empty theater. Julia whose eyes lit up when she looked up and spotted him. Julia who jump right off the stage in a swoosh of skirts before he could say anything and walked straight towards him with her arms outstretched to take his hand. Julia who beamed at him and said, "You're Mr. Angier, aren't you? Oh, I knew that you would decide to join us! I know we don't have the biggest act in town, but you can't beat the people you'll be working with. It's like a real family here."

He had never seen her from closer than the distance between the audience and the stage before, mostly with water and glass between them to further muddle her features.

He had never before realized that she had the most beautiful smile he'd ever seen.

He had never caught himself staring at her like he was a schoolboy with his first crush before, even though those days had long since passed.

He felt his resolve crumbling, and before his mind could even catch up to the way he was feeling he heard himself say, "Why, yes. That is exactly why I decided to work here."

And as he watched her turn and run to get Milton for him, he felt a new resolution forming in his mind.

He would marry that woman before the year was out.
