Title: Guilt
Fandom: One Piece
Characters: Usopp and Nami
Notes: For June fic-a-day

"Do you ever feel a little guilty about this?" Nami asked Usopp. For once they'd come to an island that was both perfectly safe in its own right, and completely free of any other people who wanted to fight them, and the two of them were reveling in it. Currently they'd found a small sheltered cove to splash around in and were taking full advantage of it, as much to get away from the increasingly antsy fighters in their crew as for the fun of swimming.

Usopp gaped at her, not sure how to respond to Nami admitting guilt, especially when he didn't actually know what she was talking about. "The great captain Usopp never feels guilt! He knows that if he's chosen to do something than it must be the right thing to do or else he wouldn't have done it... but exactly which of his choices are we talking about just now?" he hedged.

"This." Nami waved an arm to take in the area around them, then let herself fall back with a splash and float, her arms spread, on the surface of the sea. "It's so nice, getting out on the water on a hot day. But Luffy and Chopper and Robin and Brook will never get to do this. Ahh, it's stupid but it doesn't really feel right."

Usopp looked around at the sparkling blue water, at the way if you faced away from the island you could see all the way to where the sea met the horizon in the distance and made it feel like they were surrounded by a dome of blue, at the Thousand Sunny bobbing on the waves further down the coast, at the water gleaming on Nami's legs as she slowly kicked them just enough to keep herself drifting (and then looked quickly away from them again). He tried to imagine what it would be like to be all but married to the sea without ever having a chance to dive in and enjoy it, at least not without Sanji kicking off his shoes and jumping in to drag you out again a second later before you have a chance to drown. Finally he said, "No, Nami. It's not stupid at all."
