Title: Dream On
Fandom: Suikoden V
Pairing: Lucretia/Lelei
Notes: For June Fic-a-Day

Lucretia heard the shuffling and the quiet thumps of limbs being bangs into walls followed by muffled cursing well before Lelei and Cius reached her room, and nodded to herself. She had known that they were planning a gift for her, although she had kindly not said anything as they had clearly been trying to hide the little tics that gave that truth away to. The apparent size, judging from the noises they were making, was something of a surprise, as was being roused in the middle of the night by their sounds although it was good to know that they were wise enough to realize that it was best to smuggle in anything large in after dark.

There was a quiet knock, and Lelei softly asked through the door, "My Lady? Are you awake?"

"I have been, yes," Lucretia replied. "Please, come in."

Lelei was beaming when she opened the door and met Lucretia's eyes. "We have a gift for you, My Lady."

Lucretia raised an eyebrow as they finally dragged her gift into the room. "A mattress?"

"And new bedclothes as well," Lelei made sure to point out, the pink silks and plush velvets draped over the edge of the mattress more something that would be expected in a palace than a prison cell.

"I noticed that the ones the prison provided for you weren't in the best shape, since it's been so long since the last time someone used this room," Cius piped in. "And Lelei said that she had some spare money saved up for a rainy day, so... well, you should really be thanking her, since she's the one who bought it."

"I made sure to get one stuffed with down instead of straw or wool. It's very comfortable, My Lady."

They were both looking as eager as children waiting to be praised for doing something well, and Lucretia rewarded them with a smile. "Thank you, both of you. I do appreciate this."

"We're just glad we could do something for you, Lady Merces," Cius said, with a small bow. He then looked at Lelei with a small smile twitching around his mouth and added, "Why don't I guard the door while the two of you switch the mattresses? We've made it so far, it would be terrible for one of the guards who aren't on our side to come check to see why your light is on at this hour and discover that we've been going beyond the terms of our duty." He bowed again as he left the room.

"This should only take a moment, My Lady," Lelei said, already moving to pull the old mattress from the bed.

"Tell me, Lelei," Lucretia said, lifting her fan from her table and brushing the tips of its feathers thoughtfully against her chin as she watched her guard, "how much does this job pay you?"

"My Lady?" Lelei asked, sounding surprised and glancing at her for a moment.

"No, never mind, you don't need to answer. I have an idea already, from overhearing other guards in this place complaining about their pay."

"I make enough to get by well enough, My Lady," Lelei said, already dragging the new mattress into its place on the bed frame with swift efficiency. "There's no need for you to worry about me, although... I can't say that it doesn't make me happy that you would."

"But it hardly sounds like enough to be purchasing such luxuries as a gift." Lucretia approached Lelei from behind, and reached out to gently let her fingertips rest on the back of the other woman's neck. "Why, if someone were to ask me to read these actions I'd say that the person receiving the gift must be a lover. Or someone being courted for one."

Lelei froze under her hand, then slowly seemed to crumble, her straight posture falling into a stoop. "I should know better than to hope that I could hide anything from you, My Lady," she whispered. "But I swear that I desire nothing but to remain your devoted servant. I wouldn't dream of anything more."

"Whoever taught you to think like that?" Lucretia asked, smiling as she turned Lelei towards herself. "Certainly not me. You should always dream of more; haven't I taught you that wars are lost when tacticians set their minds too firmly on what is and refuse to consider what might be? And there's always the chance that you might receive more than you hope for."

Her fan clattered to the floor as she reached up to cup Lelei's face between both hands and leaned forward to kiss her gently, with just the tiniest bit too much pressure for it to be written off as chaste. Lelei's skin was cool and soft, both under her hands and under her lips, a very different feel than the last woman that Lucretia had been in this position with but just as pleasant.

"You may love me if you wish, Lelei," she said when she pulled away, leaving the other woman pale and wide-eyed with shock. "I will be glad to have that love. But the next time you wish to give me a gift, do remember that a new book on strategy or news from the world outside is more than enough. There's no need to spend more than a month's pay to make me comfortable." Then her smile turned wicked, the look on her face one scarcely anyone had ever seen since she only ever wore it in the bed room. "Although perhaps in the future you might be glad for this new mattress as well."
