Title: Where's a Walkthrough?
Fandom: Final Fantasy VII
Characters: Me, NPCs
Notes: For June fic-a-day. I don't usually put the prompts I'm using up here, but in just this one case I feel like I must explain. The requester wanted a realistic self-insertion fic; how you think you'd actually respond if you found yourself in a fictional world you're a fan of. To which I could only think 'I would freak out and start obsessing over the timing of any plot events that would definitely kill me if I got caught in them'.
The girl sat at a corner table in one of the filthier, and therefore cheap enough for even the poorest slum rats, restaurants in the Wall Market. She was dressed unusually simply--a plain pair of jeans, a plain tee-shirt, not a single belt, pendant, or any zippers but for the one holding her pants closed--and had a pile of what looked like every newspaper from Midgar to Wutai piled up in front of her.
Anyone who passed close enough could hear her mumbling to herself in a steady stream as she dug through the papers. "Okay, so Sapphire attacked Junon just a few days ago," she muttered as she tossed aside one and picked up another. "That means... the huge materia quest now? Wait, finding Cloud came first, right? But are they being played by somebody who knows right where to go to find him, or are they going to be wandering around for a while? Okay, it's okay, that still gives me lots of time to get out of here before Diamond shows up. That's after... after going back to Rocket Town, right? Or was there something else first? God, it's been too long since the last time I played to remember!" She buried her face in her hands, silent for a moment before the rambling started again. "It's all right, it's not like I need to get far. Nothing ever happened in Kalm after the first disc other than trading with that one guy, right? It'll be safe there... but how am I going to get there with all the monsters in the way? I could barely get through the playground!"
And the people who walked through the restaurant past her shook their heads, and clucked their tongues, and privately made bets with each other about how long it would be before she started wearing a black cloak like everyone else who'd gone insane that year.
