Notes: For June fic-a-day. Takes place pre-SH1. (Actually, I guess pre-Origins would be the better description now.)

Alessa's mama didn't give her an allowance, so she always kept her eyes open for money people dropped on the sidewalk. She carefully saved the pennies and dimes she found until she had enough money to go to the drugstore and make a purchase. The man behind the counter always looked at her strange when she brought up a bottle of iodine or a box of band-aids and began emptying her pockets of change--'Are you sure you don't want a candy bar instead, honey?' he'd ask, his eyebrows wrinkled close together--but he always let her buy them.

She kept everything she bought hidden at the very bottom of her school bag, hidden beneath her books and homework and anything interesting she could find that would draw the attentions of the bullies if they ever managed to get her bag before they could reach the bottom. It was hard making sure nobody else ever saw what she had, but they were never allowed to go to a doctor unless something so bad happened that even her mama or Claudia's dad said God needed a little help fixing it and there was part of her that thought maybe God shouldn't be the only one taking care of littler cuts and bruises too.

She was really careful never to use them until she and Claudia were somewhere all alone, where nobody could take them away or get mad at her for having them.

"Shhh..." she whispered when Claudia whimpered, continuing to paint iodine onto the long scrape on her leg, turning the skin around it yellow. Claudia's dad had knocked her down hard enough to tear up both of her legs on the hard floor of the church, leaving bright red scrapes that had kept beading blood here and there until Alessa washed them off. "It only hurts for a little bit."

"I know," Claudia replied, just as quietly.

She didn't make another peep until Alessa had completely covered the scratches on both legs, then handed her a pair of kneesocks. "Now wear these, so even if your skirt moves the yellow won't show."

"Thank you, Alessa," Claudia said, leaning against Alessa's side as she pulled the socks on and only wincing a little when they rubbed against her scratches.

"You don't have to thank me," Alessa said, flopping her arm across Claudia's shoulders to give her a squeeze. "Sisters are supposed to help each other, right?" She waited for Claudia to nod, then pulled away to put the top back on her iodine and rebury it in her bag, then pull out a tube of Ben-Gay. "Okay, now it's your turn to do me." She pulled up the bottom of her shirt and turned her back to Claudia, and braced herself for the pain of somebody touching the bruise her mama had left stretching from her hip to her spine.
