Title: In the Cards
Fandom: Princess Maker 2
Pairing: Cube/Olive
Notes: For June Fic-a-Day
The first thing Cube did after coming home from the store, as soon as he'd set the basket holding his purchases on the kitchen counter, was find where Olive had tucked herself away in the house, kiss her on top of the head in greeting, and rest his cheek on her head. Five months in and it was still a marvel to him that he was allowed to touch her freely, with no need to worry about what was proper behavior between a servant and his mistress.
"Welcome back, Darling," she said, momentarily setting aside the deck of tarot cards she'd been shuffling to cover his hand with hers and squeeze it. His heart jumped at the term of endearment, just as it always did.
"Are those new?" he asked, reaching out to touch the stack of cards. The backs were decorated in a pattern of flowering vines, much more bright and loud than her tastes usually ran towards. He wondered if they might have been a gift from one of her clients; she hadn't gone out to tell fortunes that day, but everyone in the kingdom knew Olive and where she lived. If someone wanted to give her something as thanks for using her impressively powerful divination abilities to help them they might well just stop by the house instead of waiting until she was in town.
"They are. The salesman stopped by not long after you left," she told him. The same traveling salesman who had once sold them jewels and dresses which were entirely inappropriate for young girls (honestly, Cube still wasn't sure what his master had been thinking when he'd bought that one; though the dress looked lovely on Olive now that she was fully grown and it had been magically altered to continue fitting her, but he'd bought it for her when she should have still been far too young to wear such things and then had her wear it in front of the entire kingdom in the dance competition at that fall's Harvest Festival besides) now brought the crystals and scrying mirrors that were her tools of trade when he came seeking a sale. Cube still didn't much like the orc, but he could admit by now that he'd never once made them a bad deal or sold them anything that hadn't proven useful. Olive picked up the deck and began shifting through it again, this time holding them face-up, and turned towards him. "I don't really like the art on them much, and you know that I never really use cards, but look! Faye and Paimon!" She found the cards she'd been looking for and held them up triumphantly, smiling brightly at the images of her two patrons. "I don't know how much use I'll have for them, but I couldn't resist when I saw them."
"You can read my fortune, if you need practice with them," he offered, but she laughed and shook her head.
"That wouldn't do any good. I already know your future, Darling," she said, shuffling the two cards back into the deck. Once that was taken care of she beamed up at him, her eyes all but glowing with happiness. "You're going to live happily after."
