I have an incredibly difficult time perciving things that aren't in their normal place. For example, I was just looking for the detachable beaters for my mixer. There're two utensil drawers in my kitchen, the upper one for silverware and the lower one for spatulas, beaters, tongs, whatever. I open the lower one and the beaters aren't there. So I open the top one, dig around for a few minutes, and can't find them. Then, as I close the drawer, I see something out of the corner of my eye. I reopen the drawer, and there's one of the mixers sitting right on top of everything else. I almost miss the second one, which is also right on top of the pile. And it's not like it's a messy drawer, all the silverware is neatly arranged in a holder with just the oversized spoons and forks in the front.

I have this problem all the time. I was lucky that one of them happened to catch my eye for a second this time, normally I'll look all over before finally giving up in digust only to have someone else notice that whatever I'm looking for is sitting in the middle of an otherwise barren countertop in the middle of the room.

It's weird. It's like, if something isn't in the place (or places. My mind excepts the left-most countertop, the top drawer, the sink, or the dishwasher as places the can opener can be, so I can give things multiple places) it's assigned to then it just no longer exists until it's either returned to that place or in my hand. I just can't see it, even if it's right in front of me, if it's not where it should be.

Of course, it makes me a great source of amusement for people who know me, right up their with my tendency to forget common words and go into verbose descriptions that don't make much sense until someone figures out what I'm talking about.
