*slaps self in forehead* I just got around to reading the chat JKR held a couple of weeks back, and got to this:

Why specifically does Dumbledore trust Snape?
Another excellent and non-answerable question. I shall merely say that Snape has given Dumbledore his story and Dumbledore believes it.

Suddenly my brain explodes with plot about what said story would be. In his last years at Hogwarts Snape started dating Regulus. He didn't perticularly give a damn one way or another about the kid at first (though he but on a good act), it was just a sneaky way of getting Sirius hella ticked off. Plus, it would drive a wedge between the brothers and make it that much easier to get Regulus to join Voldemort since he'd be on the outs with the one close family member pushing for him to join the good guys. Of course, Snape proceeds to grow quite fond of Regulus, and after he's killed by Voldemort runs to Dumbledore to get his revenge. Featuring homophobic!Sirius, which makes him even more angry since Snape "made" his brother a queer.

The hell, brain? Not only wouldn't I want to write a fic like that (although, actually, I would do it if I didn't have so many other fics to work on. Just to get it out of my head, to work on my Snape voice a bit, and to see if I could write this without it sucking as much as I picture a fic like this would), I wouldn't even be interested in reading it unless it was by an author who I really trust to be good, even with pairings or plots that I'm uninterested in. I have no idea where the hell this came from, other then perhaps the fact that I'm really tired. It just sprung fully-formed from my forehead upon reading that answer. *looks very confused*
