person4You know, the tendency people have in fandoms to label any original character who ends up paired up with any character who's even close to being a main character a Mary Sue annoys the hell out of me. Sure, I hate Mary Sues as much as the next person, but that doesn't mean that I automatically assume that an OC is going to be one. And when you're writing for a series that has four times more boys then girls, where what girls there are tend to be completely vacant twits that you have no interest what-so-ever in writing, and where some of your favorite guy characters strike you as being completely straight, there aren't that many options. You can try to work the twits into fully formed human beings, you can have those characters be single forever, or you can make a new character and try to develop them in a way that you think could lead to a workable relationship with the canon character. Or I suppose you could just suck it up and pair them with another guy but... no. Some people just shouldn't be slashed.
Not that I'm allowing myself to start writing anything new when I have other stuff I need to finish. But I have been reading fics where people have taken the OC path for pairing said characters and people start bitching, and I just stare in confusion wondering what exactly they were reading when as far as I could see there was nothing Sueish in the OCs (across multiple fics, not multiple OCs in one. That would be getting into the realm of the annoying after too many show up) other then getting paired with a fairly high-up canon character. It makes me have second thoughts about ever getting into the fandom in the future, since I don't want to always leave my favorite characters to die alone and the very idea of going back and studying the twits close enough to bang out a decent personality for one of them makes my brain ache.
And I realise I'm being overly vague here, it's just that the fandom in question is a very embarrassing guilty pleasure, and if I never actually start ficcing it I'd like to be able to deny having any interest in it.
And I'm a person who fully admits to being a huge fan of Captain Planet, so that should tell you something about how bad a series needs to be before I'm ashamed to admit to liking it.
