I don't really watch Survivor, but I like to watch the first episode of each season so I'll at least have some idea who my mom or grandma are talking about when they try to talk about it at me. So, watched tonight, and all I could think during the opening ceremony was "What the hell are these women bitching about? The natives might be sexist, but said sexism kept them from having to drink something that all the guys seemed to find nasty (and which apparently numbed their mouths and throats) and having pig's blood smeared all over their faces. That's supposed to be a bad thing? If they had to deal with these people in their real day to day life and were always treated like that then sure, rail against it. But in this case? Frankly, I'd be kowtowing to the big strong manfolk within the blink of an eye to keep myself out of it.

I know that it's their culture and that I shouldn't be derisive of it, and if I did need to go through with it I'd do so with as much grace as I could muster, but the thought of someone smearing still-warm blood on my face just makes me shudder.
