person4This idiot guy who was supposed to fix a shower drain that was leaking water into the garage tore a hole in the garage ceiling, removed a hunk of the heat vents in there since they were in the way of the pipes, didn't fix anything, and left the hole wide open for several weeks. At the same time my mom was tearing up carpet in the living room and left the vent covers off the vents while doing so and waiting for the new carpet to come. The guy eventually fixed the vents (though not the shower), but in the meantime a family of mice came in from the cold through the heating system.
The things are smart enough to usually only come out a night when only myself and the cats (two of which are good mousers) are awake. However, being dumb animals, they're too stupid to realize that I'm the only living creature in the house (save perhaps the last cat, who's more likely just too lazy to give a damn) who'd rather see them alive then dead.
So, every time I hear the sound of desperate squeeks I have to get up and hunt the newest mouse with my hands. So far I've managed to safely pick up all but one and put them outside. The last got attacked by one of the cats while I had headphones on and couldn't hear it, and it was knocked out before I realized it was there. It was still breathing though, and it was gone from the spot I put it down and covered it with a leaf to keep off the cold.
I'm suddenly getting this new reputation for bravery in the family. They're impressed that I'm not only the only one who'll pick up any spider terrifying the family and put it out, I'll also carry around live mice. Both for the same reason, they're cute and I know if I didn't do it they'd get killed.
Of course, everytime they're acting overawed one of them will just have to bring up the fact "Well, sure, but don't forget she's terrified of worms."
And that, my nonexistant friends, is a story for another time. I might even tell it one day.
