person4: (Death Note)

My puppy (five-year-old dog, but still a puppy) has arthritis in her hips, poor thing. Yesterday morning she suddenly started whimpering a lot, shaking, keeping her tail tucked between her legs, and basically not acting well, though on the positive side she was still eating and drinking normally and wasn't vomiting or diarrhetic or anything. And when I went down into the basement for awhile she followed me, which she always does, but she didn't come back up after me. At first I just figured she probably decided to stay down there for awhile because it's nice and cool, especially compared to the recent heatwave, but when I went down to check on her I found she'd try to start up the stairs but would just put one front paw on the bottom one and then not go any further. So I carried her up, and it's a good thing I'm strong enough to do that. And when she jumped up on the couch later that night, which she's done a thousand times before, just doing it made her yelp.

So, took her to the vet appointment I made for her first thing this morning, and, like I said, the diagnosis was arthritis. The vet thinks that it seemed to appear out of nowhere because yesterday morning or the night before she got banged on her hips somehow and really set it off.

So, now I have a two week supply of medication for her, and I'm supposed to first cut down how far she goes on walks as the medicine helps her, while at the same time cutting down how much food she has to make her lose about ten pounds. Once there's less weight for her to carry around on her hips he said to then start upping the length of walks again. And when the two weeks are over, it's time to take her to the vet again for a check-up to see if the medicine and diet are working well on her.

Poor thing. I've been saying to myself for ages that I ought to feed her less, and if I'd just had the willpower to ignore her when she's making puppy-dog eyes at me in front of her empty food bowl yesterday might not have been so bad for her.
