Notes: The previous chapters can be found here. Thank you to everyone who's read this far! I hope that you enjoy the finale; it's really the only way I thought it could end.

Lulu had always believed that there was clarity to be found in sleep. She would often find that after a good night's sleep the answers to problems that had seemed impossible to solve when she went to bed would suddenly seem so obvious that she didn't know how she hadn't seen them to begin with.

It had been a very long time since she'd last had a truly restful sleep. Perhaps that was why it had taken her so long to come to the realisation she woke with this morning.

She didn't do anything about it at first; now that she knew what she had to do she felt free to treat herself to the luxury of a slow awakening, followed by sneaking into Cid's bathroom for a shower so hot that the steam almost smothered her. She had to admit, once she'd figured out the controls for the water, that not having to heat bath water over a fire was one of the few technological advances that any Yevonite would probably get down on their knees and beg the Al Bhed to share, teachings be damned, if they knew that such a things existed.

When she put her hair back up into her customary style a while later, after taking the time to brush out the rest of the tangles that Cid had been unable to get to with her sleeping on them, she felt the closest to normal that she has since leaving Besaid at the start of Yuna's pilgrimage so long ago.

It was time to find Cid.

When she walked onto the airship bridge he grinned as soon as he saw her. "Well, looks like Sleepin' Beauty's up at last," he said, walking over to join her. "'Fraid the rest of your group's still out in the cave. They came back to rest up awhile ago, but since you were still sleepin' they reckoned they'd better let you rest instead've wakin' you up when they went back out again."

"Ah. Thank you for letting me know." She glanced around the bridge, at the Al Bhed there who were busily going about their work, and then looked back at him. "Would you mind coming back to you room so we could speak privately?" she asked.

"Hell! Don't worry none about that. These guys don't speak twenty words of Yevonite between them, just watch." He raised his voice slightly, just enough so it carried across the room, he exclaimed "Haggle-toothed mother of a halma! I just hit the self-destruct button! We're all gonna die if we don't get movin' now!"

None of the other Al Bhed so much as looked at them.

"See what I told you?" he asked, grinning wider.

"Cid, I really believe that we should..." she began, than realized that she knew him well enough to be sure that she wasn't going to be able to convince him to go elsewhere. "All right," she conceded. "I wanted to speak with you about... the future."

"Did'ja now?" He leaned forward attentively, raising his eyebrows. "I've gotta admit, I didn't expect that that's what you wanted to talk about."

"I didn't think it would be that much of a surprise. I think we've been putting this off for far too long." She took a deep breath than looked up and met his eyes. "Cid, you are the leader of the Al Bhed. And I am, and, in the eyes of my people, always will be a Guardian. There will always be people who see my behaviour as a reflection of hers, and, for her sake, I can't do anything that they would see as untoward. Do you understand?"

Cid eyes had widened as she spoke, and for a moment he seemed completely at loss for words. "But..." he finally stammered, "the other day... you said..."

"I said I wouldn't make a secret of the fact that I'm a friend to the Al Bhed, and that's still true. Anything more than a friend, however... it just can't happen." She bowed her head, unwilling to see the look on his face when she said the final thing she needed to tell him. "Cid... April Fools."

The real next chapter is coming along, and it's not going to be that last one. See you then!
