Notes: For June fic-a-day

Salome and Percival had just sat down for lunch at the castle's cafe when Cecile walked up to them, twisting her spear in her hands nervously. "Sir Salome?" she said as she stopped at their table.

"Yes, Commander Cecile?" Salome replied, privately hoping that she hadn't been sent to inform him of some problem he needed to help take care of right away. He'd been so busy that he hadn't had a chance to sit down to a real meal since breakfast the day before, and he'd been looking forward to having a moment to relax.

"You're forgetting your manners, Salome," Percival said, then looked up at Cecile with an easy smile. "Hello, Cecile. Would you care to join us?"

For a second she looked like she was going to explode from glee at being invited to dine with two of the Six Mighty Knights of Zexen, but, in a rare display of maturity, she quickly got her expression under control and said, "I'd be honored to, Sir Percival."

"It's our honor to dine with such a charming young woman," he said, reaching for the bottle of mead he'd grabbed at the bar to drink with lunch. "Would you care for a drink?"

"Percival!" Salome said sharply, stopping the other knight before he could pour then turning in his seat to speak with the chef at the counter behind them. "Excuse me, Miss Mamie, could you pour a glass of milk before my companion here can attempt to intoxicate the commander of the guards?"

Cecile blinked at him, wide-eyed, as he retrieved the milk from Mamie and set it before her. "I'm sure Sir Percival wouldn't try doing that, Sir Salome!" she protested.

To his credit, Percival at least had enough shame to look embarrassed as Salome said, "I'm afraid you wouldn't say that if you got to know him, Commander Cecile. Louis with confirm it, if you ask him." He offered her the basket of bread they'd been snacking on as they waited for their orders to be prepared, and prompted her, "Now, what was it you wished to speak with me about?"

"Oh! Well..." She took a roll and began tearing it into little pieces as she hemmed and hawed, staring down at her working hands instead of at them. "I... I just wanted to say thank you again for making my position official, Sir Salome!" She tried bowing deeply to him, not an easy task while she was still sitting and had her movements impaired by the plate mail she was dressed in from the waist up.

"Why Salome," Percival said, clearly amused, "you never told us that you'd met the commander here before."

Salome ignored him in favor of Cecile. "It was nothing, Commander Cecile. In fact, I was glad to have the chance to set aside the war and the corruption in the council for some little while to do work I knew would come to good."

She flushed and shot to her feet, bowing again once she was standing. "Thank you, Sir Salome! I promise I won't disappoint you! I should get back to my post, but, oh...!" She suddenly grabbed her glass of milk and swallowed it down in one long gulp. "And thank you for the milk and bread too!"

"I do believe you have yourself an admirer, Salome," Percival said, laughing as he watching Cecile darting away. Salome sighed and briefly considered setting aside his tea for a cup of Percival's wine. He could already foresee that Percival, and the other knights once he told them about it, would be making jokes about this for days.
