Title: Target Practice
Fandom: Suikoden III
Pairing: Aila/Jacques
Notes: For June fic-a-day

After watching him for so long, Aila had learned how to find Jacques when he vanished the way he always tended too. Step one to finding him was getting to high ground, step two was finding places with lots of coverage he could hide behind, and step three was finding a spot where Geddoe was clearly visible that matched both those requirements. Sure as the seasons Jacques would be there, ready to shoot at anyone who looked like they were going to attack his leader.

There wasn't any need for greetings between them. He knew when she approached him, and she knew that he knew, so neither of them felt the need to bother with hellos. Today as she got into speaking distance of him she said, "I wanted to do some target practice today. Do you want to join in?"

He kept looking down at Geddoe for a minute, until he decided that it really didn't seem as if there'd be any danger to him, then stood up with a nod. "What is the target?"

She examined their surroundings, then pointed. "Is the knot in that tree good?" It was almost at the end of her firing range, but a good few feet short of the end of his, but she thought it would be fine for both of them.

Again he nodded and silently swung his crossbow down from his shoulder and fired a bolt straight into the center of the knot. He made it look completely effortless.

"Good shot!" she said, then spontaneously leaned up to peck him on the lips. She could feel her cheeks flushing, and thanked the spirits that the blush wouldn't be too obvious. ...Unlike Jacques, whose pale cheeks were bright pink when she moved back. "That was for getting a bullseye," she said, and then stood back to take her own shot.
