Oct. 25th, 2008 02:52 pmThank goodness, I'm finally starting to get past my yearly blahs that set in when the weather first gets cold and I can't find the energy to do anything I'm not forced into by Real Life but snuggle up under covers and try to keep warm. It feels like it took me a little longer than usual to get adjusted to the weather this time.
Now it's time for my yearly
yuletide pimping! Now, I'm not one of the people who are going to say that there's no bad fic in the Yuletide archive, the people who honestly think that have just had very good luck when it comes to which fics they read, but the signal-to-noise ration is very high for an archive its size. Most people really seem to take to heart that they're writing a gift for someone, and try as hard as they can to write a fic that their recipient will enjoy.
And I know that "it's better to give than to receive" is a cliché, but in this case I think it's at least as good as, because it's always an incredibly awesome feeling to get your feedback from your recipient and find out that you've made them happy.
And, of course, getting that fic you've always wanted in that fandom that you've searched and searched for fic about only to come up with next to nothing should be enough to sell you all on its own, if you think you can write 1000 words in about a month and a half. Nominations are open right here until the Halloween! You need to nominate a fandom yourself to be sure it will get in, don't be fooled into thinking that because it's on the list it will get in because people can change their minds! When requests open you only need to offer to write four fandoms, so if you have any worries about getting done in time you are free to only offer fandoms and the characters in them you know backwards and forwards and could write about in your sleep instead of feeling compelled to could possibly be able write for.
This year I'm planning on being a lot more selective with my requests myself. I always end up getting assigned a fandom that I offered just because it wasn't getting many offers and I felt guilty about not putting it on my list when I at least knew the fandom. Last year this wasn't so bad, since I made a list before had of fandoms I knew I at least could confidently write, so I just ended with one that I needed to do a replay for but knew I'd be okay once I brushed up on the canon, but it's really ended up freaking me out sometimes in the past. So this year I'm planning on only offering fandoms and characters I really want to write, and get excited just at the possibility that I might be assigned them. This will be the year of no freakouts, even about the possibility that I won't be able to finish canon-reviewing on time!
